CM Punk: Become Involved
Holding the WWE Championship for almost a year, being one of the biggest names in the world of pro wrestling and having his story be the star of the fastest selling wrestling DVD currently on the market, CM Punk's stock has never been higher. It wasn't always this way for the Chicago-born grappler, who has overcome numerous roadblocks on his route to the top.
Now at the stage in his career where many younger talents look for encouragement and advice, Punk is more than happy to share his "do-it-yourself" mentality.
"Just get in the business. I know that sounds kind of condescending, but that's what I did. I didn't know there was such a thing as a wrestling school where you had to go and get trained. So, when I started, to me, it was like starting a band with me a couple of friends. 'OK, I'll play bass, you play drums, you sing, somebody will play guitar,' and you do that", the 13-year veteran told fans at a Comic-Con convention in Austin, Texas.
"For us, it was, 'Let's wrestle. OK, now we need a ring, let's build one. Now we need to buy one,' and so on and so forth. I did that and I drew the ire - did everybody see my DVD? Well, I pissed off a lot of people because there was this wrestling sub-culture in Chicago who were all like, 'you're a bunch of backyarders.' I was like, 'Well, what do you mean? What's wrong with that?' 'You've got to get trained!' I was like, 'Oh, OK,' and I went in and got trained. To me, it was like no harm, no foul. That's what you've got to do".
