Shimmering with hope
The current women's division is on a major high in both the UK and the US. (Even the flagging Japanese scene is still surviving through some well-received shows these days).
Women's wrestling has achieved success through one single quality-talent.
While women have oft-times struggled to gain the recognition of their male counterparts, and have been hindered by certain promotions throwing up 'T&A' as the only viable avenue for their women to achieve a mainstream presence, there are great promoters and promotions out there who are more interested in having women kick ass than show it.
Shimmer, Chickfights and others are at the forefront in the US at doing this. With great talent such as Allison Danger, Daizee Haze, Lacey, Portia Perez, Sara Del Ray, Mercedes Martinez, Cheerleader Melissa, MsChif and others, these promotions are presenting women in highly competitive and athletically precise matches, without the need for clothes-ripping or being doused in water, mud or chocolate-based products.
Which is not to say that women cannot look beautiful doing so. Anyone who has browsed the picture gallery of www.shimmerwrestling.com cannot fail to see some very attractive women contained within. But unlike in the more sleazy side of women's wrestling, these women also maintain their pride and dignity. A dignity that comes from being the very best inside the ring.
In the UK, girls such as Jezebel and Jetta are spearheading a revolution in British wrestling, both are at the top of their game and taking a serious approach to wrestling that, combined with their talent, is having a major effect on the way women's wrestling is viewed. Fans are far less inclined to chant 'show your tits', and more inclined to appreciate them for the great wrestlers they are. In 2007, US stars such as Daizee Haze, Lacey, MsChif, Cheerleader Melissa and others will be venturing to the UK shores to face the best of the UK women. If you haven't really clicked with the womens wrestling scene before now, 2007 is your chance to do so-it will certainly open your eyes to just how good womens wrestling has become!
