Top WWE & TNA Names React To Olympic Decision
Announcing that wrestling is set to be dropped from the 2020 Olympic Games format, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have come under fire from many of the sport's patrons, including 2004 Olympic Gold winning US wrestler, Cael Sanderson.
In the pro wrestling world, several top stars have been outwardly vocal regarding the decision. Kurt Angle, who is the only Olympic Gold winning wrestler (in 1996 - pictured) to make the transition to pro wrestling, described the decision as “crazy”. Meanwhile, Dixie Carter of TNA and the legendary Bret Hart were left incredulous at what has transpired.
“We’re going to fight this. They can’t just drop it. They’re keeping badminton and that sport where you jump on a trampoline, and they’re dropping wrestling. It’s just crazy. I don’t know what this world is coming to. Things are changing”, Angle told Fox Sports.
“We need to join together right now. We encourage our own IMPACT WRESTLING community, WWE and wrestling organizations worldwide as well as competitive amateur coaches and athletes to have a unified voice to make sure wrestling will be an Olympic sport in 2020”, TNA President Dixie Carter said during a statement on the TNA website.
“Wrestling is simply what true sport is all about. If the IOC drops it, I vow to never waste my time watching ribbon gymnastics and Dressage. The Olympics will be dead to me. What a travesty”, Bret Hart Tweeted to followers.
While the decision isn't terminal for wrestling at the Olympics, and the sport still has a chance to be voted back in should the IOC re-evaluate their decision in September, it is unlikely wrestling would be given a reprieve so soon after being dropped.
