Chris Masters: WWE Release Still A Surprise

Making his debut in early-2005, it was clear WWE had high hopes for Chris Masters. Moving quickly through the ranks, Masters was feuding with the likes of Shawn Michaels by the Summer. It was clear such a program was coming too soon for the newcomer, who hadn't quite developed fully as an in-ring performer.

Released in late-2007 due to personal problems, as well as a number of violations of WWE's Wellness Policy, Masters would eventually return to the company in 2009. Showing far more ability inside the ring, Masters became a highlight of WWE Superstars, and it seemed only a matter of time before he'd be called up for another crack at the big time on Raw or Smackdown. That possible push never materialised, with the much-improved performer once again being released in the Summer of 2011.

Speaking to the Ministry Of Slam wrestling radio show, Masters reveals the surprise surrounding his release.

"Looking back now (on my WWE release), it really shouldn't have come as much of a surprise. In-ring work isn't really what matters there. Zack Ryder managed to keep his job and get over via his internet show, for example. That really sealed the deal for him", Masters told the Ministry Of Slam.

"In my last year I did get good inside the ring, but it came as more of a surprise just because of who had been keeping in touch with me. Triple H and the top brass kept pulling me aside to let me know they'd noticed I'd improved greatly and wanted to do something with me in the future. I was told Vince McMahon was high on me and whatnot, so that's why it came as a bit of a shock to be released. Once you get that kind of affirmation, you figure you at least have job security until they figure out exactly what they're gonna' do with you."
