"He was one of our worst losers," says James Connor, Forrest Griffin's high school football coach. "He didn't like losing. He wanted to win, and he got upset when he didn't."
If there's one thing you take away from this film, that's it. Griffin spends much of the time talking down his abilities. "It would be a great life if I didn't realise how many times I'd gotten lucky; like, if I thought it was all me and all my doing. But I've never been good, so I've been pretty lucky."
His self-depreciation isn't an act - and nor is his repeated fleeing of the Octagon after a disappointing performance. Forrest Griffin is simply a tough guy with above-average skills, who hates losing. It's why fans love him, and why he became the UFC's original everyman (okay, maybe the second, after Tank Abbott). And no matter whether you loved or hated him before, after watching this DVD, you'll find it impossible to dislike the guy. It's unlike any UFC fighter DVD out there, because Griffin really is unlike any other UFC fighter.
This is a man who started studying nursing at university. "My new plan, when I realised I wasn't gonna be a nurse, was to be a door-kicker. And you say, 'What's a door-kicker?' You know those guys in the SWAT gear in every movie, [who] kick doors open? That was what I wanted to do. It's like being a nurse; I know I'm not smart enough to be a doctor, but I figured I was probably smart enough to be a nurse, right? I'm not smart enough to be the detective, but I'll kick the shit out of that door."
Griffin narrates his story with the same candour and skewed humour as his books, telling his tale of going from the police academy, to fighting Dan Severn, his time on The Ultimate Fighter, winning and losing the light-heavyweight title, and even the humiliating loss to Anderson Silva.
"They were like, 'Hey, do you want a re-match?' I was like, 'Fuck no! I don't want a re-match - I wanna unmatch the first match!"
Disc Two is packed with his best fights, but it's completely secondary to the personality on show in the main feature. If you enjoyed Got Fight? you will absolutely love Forrest Griffin - The Ultimate Fighter.
Buy this, and like it or not, it'll make a Forrest fan out of you.
